IIT vs NIT vs IIIT vs BITS

Apart from the exemplary standard of education you receive in these institutes, they are famous for the platform they provide for their students. Historically, many notable people have passed out from these institutes and made their mark on the world.

If you are an engineering aspirant, you must have heard of these institutes. Let's look at the differences in these institutes and what eligibility criteria you need to fulfill to study in these institutes. You will also learn about the career opportunities and average packages you can receive when you study in these prestigious institutes of India.

Comparison Of IIT, NIT, IIIT, BITS

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)

IIT is perhaps the most popular and prestigious engineering college in India. Only the best students from all over the country have a chance to study at IITs, and their merit is rewarded as they get fantastic job offers from some of the top companies around the world.

There are a total of 23 IITs; although all of them are not equal in terms of the platform they provide for students, all of them are equally hard to get into, at least. Let's talk about the admission process for IITs, the courses they offer, the average package you could be offered, and some of their notable alumni.

Admission Process

Getting admission to an IIT is a pretty tricky task.

  • It starts with clearing your higher secondary examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Maths as your compulsory subjects.

  • Then, you need to ace your JEE Mains examinations and be among the top 1,50,000 scorers on that examination to qualify for JEE Advanced.

  • You need to ace your JEE Advanced and score at least 10% in Physics, Chemistry, and Maths and at least 35% marks in aggregate.

  • You will then be eligible for an All-India Rank.

  • That rank will place you among the 23 IITs present in India by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority.

  • If you want to get placed in the top IITs in the country, you have to be in the top half of the list in all the examinations listed above.

Courses Offered

IITs offer courses like BSc, BTech, MSc, MTech, BArch, BDes, MDes, MArch, Ph.D., MBA, and MPhil. These are the types of courses offered by IITs. You can find many subjects which these courses would offer. You also have to check with the guidelines of each particular IIT location to ensure they provide the specific course you are looking for or not.

Average Package In Various Courses

The average package for BTech courses from an IIT ranges between 12-15 lakhs per annum, and this average is for placements in domestic companies. If you get placed in foreign MNCs, you can get offers worth crores as well.

You can expect packages that range around 10-12 lakhs per annum for corporate positions and 6-8 lakhs for research positions for other BS and other courses. For an MBA from IITs, you can expect a package of 16-25 lakhs as your starting offer. The offers can be more, but usually, it is pretty attractive.

National Institute of Technology (NIT)

NITs are respected and prestigious institutes. There are 31 NITs, all of which are autonomous public higher education universities. 20 of the 31 are old colleges and had been the top NITs; the 11 newly added NITs are still trying to make their mark. Let's take a look at the admission process, courses offered, average placement offers, and notable alumni of NITs.

Admission Process

  • Clear higher secondary examination with a minimum of 75% aggregate marks and Physics, Chemistry, and Maths as your compulsory subjects.

  • You also have to clear the JEE Mains examination, and according to the rank you receive, you will be placed in an NIT by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority according to your All India Rank.

  • You can find the specific rank cutoffs for each NIT online.

Courses Offered

NITs offer courses such as BTech, BSc, MSc, BArch, MTech, MArch, MBA, MCA, MA, and MPhil. These courses are offered in almost all NITs; however, you must check the website of NIT to be sure of the courses offered by the institute.

Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT)

IIITs are relatively new, and not many people are aware of them. IIITs are public and private partnership universities specifically curated for technical education in India. They are currently one of the best institutes for students to pursue their BTech degrees as they are made explicitly for engineering studies.

Because of the public and private model, these institutes have a high fee, offering the highest packages. Let's take a closer look at the admission, courses offered, average packages, and notable alumni of IITs.

Admission Process

  • You must have completed (10+2) higher secondary education from a recognized board with Physics, Chemistry, and Maths as your compulsory subjects.

  • You can get admission from your JEE Mains score.

  • You can also access the Special Channel of Admission by appearing for a different Undergraduate Entrance Examination or the Lateral Entry Entrance Exam.

Courses Offered

IIITs offer BTech, MTech, Ph.D., MS, MPhil, PGSSP, and MSIT programs in various subjects. You have to go through the official website of each IIIT to ensure your choice of study program is available at the IIIT of your choice.

Average Package in Various Courses

Notable Alumni

As a reasonably new institute, there are not as many notable alumni members from IIITs as you would find from other institutes. You can still find very successful alumni members who are currently placed worldwide in various domestic and MNCs.

Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS)

BITS is a private university that is highly regarded and seen as somewhat equal to the other government universities. BITS has a reputation for housing some of the best faculty members worldwide for each subject. The fantastic faculty aside, they are also very popular with students as they offer quality placements with high-average packages for students in almost every stream. Courses Offered

It should be noted that BITS does not offer BTech courses, and they offer BE courses, which they claim to be challenging science courses that focus on engineering and mathematics. You can also find BPharm and MSc courses at BITS.

Average Package in Various Courses

For BE courses, not BTech, the average package for students comes around 18 lakhs per annum. The average package for other courses such as BPharm, is about 9-11 lakhs per annum for non-core courses. For core courses, the number is lower at around 4-6 lakhs per annum.

Selecting a college can be challenging, and you should consider the top options to know what you are striving for after your exams. Not everyone can get into IITs or IIITs. There are over 3,500 engineering colleges in India, & students from all of these colleges have reached great heights of success in their careers even after not studying at IITs.

One of the best examples would be the Jodhpur Institute of Engineering and Technology, the best engineering and technology college in Rajasthan. You can find success stories about their alumni and how they are well-placed in different parts of the world today at some of the top companies worldwide on the college website.
