How to become an Artificial Intelligence engineer?

The demand for AI engineers is high for a good reason. We all know that Artificial intelligence has seemingly endless potential to improve and simplify the tasks commonly done by humans and that too with better efficiency like business process management, speech recognition, business analytics, image processing, and even the diagnosis of disease.

If you're a techno freak and have a background in software programming or are interested in it, you may want to consider yourself for a bright and lucrative career in AI.

In this blog, you'll learn all about becoming an AI engineer- We will discuss the following things briefly.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a computer system's ability to simulate human behavior. The Machines demonstrate this kind of intelligence, which can be compared to humans' natural intellect.

In artificial intelligence, machines learn from former or past data and their actions. Then with this new information, the machine can make improvements to itself so that the previous problems don't resurface and make any necessary adjustments to handle new inputs.

What does an AI Engineer do?

We now know what Artificial Intelligence (AI) is. So let's get into what an AI engineer does. An artificial intelligence engineer works closely with algorithms, neural networks, and other tools to advance artificial intelligence to tackle the novel design challenges that emerge from combining the logic found in traditional applications with the learned sense from machine learning models.

AI engineers extract data efficiently from various sources, build and test them on different machine learning principles, and deploy those principles using embedded code or API calls to create AI-infused applications for practical use.

In simple terms, they use extensive data in such a form that machines can read and take action accordingly.

Artificial Intelligence Engineers’ Responsibilities

  • Analyze and transform Data Science Prototypes.

  • Study and Implement appropriate ML algorithms and AI tools.

  • Build Machine Learning applications as per the requirements.

  • Working with Electronics and Robotics departments.

  • Conduct statistical analysis and tune the results so that the organization can make informed decisions

  • Create data ingestion and data transformation infrastructure

  • Set up and maintain AI development and product infrastructure

  • Select relevant Datasets and Data representation methods.

  • Run various Machine Learning / AI experiments and trials.

  • Train and retrain machine learning systems whenever required.

  • Stay abreast of the latest developments within AI.

  • Convert the machine learning models into the application program

  • Last but not the list, be a good team player, as coordinating with others is a must

Skillset required to become an AI Engineer

The skillset of an AI engineer can be classified broadly into two parts. One is technical skills, and the one is a non-technical skill.

Technical Skill:

Programming Skills: it's crucial to learn programming languages, such as Python, R, Java, Lisp, Prolog and C++, etc.

Statistics / Calculus / Algebra: Statistics is the backbone of any algorithm. In fact, your whole AI program will depend on the type of algorithm that you have used. Therefore, to work on an algorithm, you will need considerable knowledge of statistics, calculus, algebra, and probability to advance your AI program.

Spark and Big Data Technologies: AI engineers work with large volumes of the dataset, which might be streaming or maybe producing real-time data in terabytes or petabytes. To work on these data types, AI engineers need to know about Spark and other big data technologies to make sense. Apart from Apache Spark, one can also use other big data technologies, like Hadoop, MongoDB, Cassandra, etc.

Apart from these, as an AI engineer, you have to work extensively on NLP, which involves language, audio, and video processing by leveraging various NLP libraries and tools, like Gensim, NTLK, Sentiment Analytics, TextBlob, CoreNLP, PyNLPI, etc.

Non-technical/ Business skills

Aper from technical skills, an AI engineer will need various non-tech skills like communication, analytical and critical thinking, and industry knowledge. These will help to pitch their products and ideas to stakeholders precisely.

AI Engineer salaries: According to Glassdoor, the national average salary for an AI Engineer is ₹8,90,870 in India and $114,121 in the United States. The pay scale may differ in several organizations as per the knowledge and expertise you have.
