What is interior design?

Interior design is the practice of enhancing the interior of a building to achieve a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing environment for the people using the space. Interior design is the art and science of understanding people's behavior to create functional spaces within a building. Interior designers use this science, art, and understanding of human behavior to improve people's quality of life within the built environment.

Interior design as a profession or an academic discipline incorporates many factors, including but not limited to lighting, acoustics, color, ergonomics, sustainability, space planning, materials, and building regulations, to create functional spaces that benefit the building's users.

A professional interior designer can design residential, commercial, healthcare, educational, and governmental interiors. Interior designers must know the elements that make up a space.

Is interior design a good career option?

Interior design is a rewarding profession. It's also an immensely competitive field. If you have a passion for design, you may be tempted to dive right in.

How long does it take to become an interior designer?

There are two ways you can become one: 1) Learn the techniques through college, technical school, or relevant certificate program, and then find work as an apprentice, or 2) Enroll in a program or class that teaches the techniques by practicing them yourself.

Most interior design programs are 2- 4 year, full-time courses. Some colleges may also offer 1-year certificate programs. These programs typically last a few weeks to 12 months and introduce you to only the basics of interior design.

A certificate program in interior design might be a good option if you want to start a career as an interior designer but aren't ready to commit to 4 years of full-time study. These programs generally take a year or less to complete and are geared toward people with a college degree or years of professional experience in an unrelated field. These programs are also a good option for people who want to pursue interior design part-time or weekend jobs while still working a full-time job elsewhere.

Many certificate programs are offered online, and you may be able to take classes even as you work a full-time job. Some certificate programs also provide continuing education, so you might be able to earn your degree a few credits at a time.

Career Scope:

Interior design is a highly versatile field. Interior designers are creative types with an artistic bent. Interior design is a hands-on profession that requires a lot of creativity, imagination and drawing, and business skills.

Interior designers work in various settings, from the offices of large design firms to small boutiques. Designers typically work in teams, typically under the direction of a project manager or decorator. Some work on a freelance basis so they can work independently and meet clients as they choose, while others take on staff positions.

Interior design is a multifaceted profession. In addition to the creative aspects of design, interior designers often work with architects, contractors, decorators, or other professionals.
